10 Common IPC standards for the PCB and PCBA industry


The IPC (Interconnection and Electronic Circuits Council) was founded in 1957 and is an international trade association with approximately 2,300 member companies representing all areas of the electronic interconnection industry today. Below is a list of 10 IPC standards PCB (printed circuit board) and PCBA involving these three industries, if there are any omissions, please feel free to add.


Acceptability of electronic assembly. The purpose of this standard implementation is to help PCB and PCBA manufacturers in the SMT process to produce high-quality products. It is the most widely used inspection standard within the electronics industry, and is also a common international quality inspection standard. It specifies how the components are assembled to the PCB qualified, for each level of the standard provides measurable component location and solder joint size, and provides the corresponding technical indicators of qualified solder joints.

It will be divided into three levels of product standards: general purpose, special services and high-performance electronics, and to each level set up four acceptance conditions: target conditions, acceptable conditions, defect conditions and process warning conditions. In addition, it provides a detailed explanation of some specialized terms in the manufacturing process. In addition, the standard provides detailed descriptions of the operation of electronic components, mounting of components, solder joints and soldering, and SMD assembly, common defects, etc.


Soldering requirements for electrical and electronic assemblies. It specifically describes the materials, methods and audit requirements for the manufacture of high-quality leaded and lead-free interconnect components, and has become a general guideline for electronic connections in the electronics industry. The content mainly covers:

● Bad soldering conditions and soldering methods for electronic components
● Assembly and soldering of conductors and terminals
● Mounting of through-hole components and leads
SMT PCB (Surface mounting technology) in the installation of components

Rework & rework of electronic components and circuit boards. In order to save costs, many manufacturers choose to rework and rework as a way to save costs. This standard provides a great help for manufacturers and assembly engineers, from through-hole, surface mount rework, connection tray, conductor and laminate rework, to guidance on all aspects of lead-free, BGA and flex circuit board rework. It includes tools, materials and methods, and procedural requirements for removing and changing coatings, surface mount, and through-hole components. It is constantly being updated and new content is being added.


Acceptance conditions for printed circuit boards. This standard is specifically for circuit boards. Specifies the grade of the PCB, acceptance criteria, dimensions and tolerances, terminology and definitions, etc. Various specifications are given for acceptable and unacceptable conditions from the internally observed (dielectric data, conductive pattern general rules, drilled and coated holes, etc.) and externally observed (surface defects, conductive pattern defects, hole characteristics, marking anomalies, solder resist coating layer defects, dimensional characteristics, etc.). In addition, the standard has been written for other types of PCBs (flexible circuits, rigid / flexible composite circuits, metal core PCBs), as well as the requirements for cleanliness testing, solderability rock and electrical integrity, and so on.


Technical and acceptance standards for cable and wire harness assembly. This standard is mainly for the assembly of cables and harnesses, mainly including:

● Terminal crimping standard
● Welding standards
● Connector crimping and assembly standards, the
● Injection molding appearance standard


Performance requirements for rigid printed circuit boards. This specification provides a detailed overview of the qualification and performance requirements for rigid printed circuit boards, and is complementary to IPC-RB-276. The standard describes the performance levels, types, and design approaches for rigid boards, such as single-sided PCBs, active/passive embedded PCBs, metal-core PCBs, HDI, etc. All of these designs and their performance requirements are broadly classified in this standard. In addition the standard also adds some applicable terms, processes, materials and tests.


Test method for PCB boards. Many third-party testing organizations use this standard to evaluate all aspects of the PCB. It provides a variety of test methods for PCBs: visual test method, dimensional test method, chemical test method, mechanical test method, electrical test method, environment test method and etc.

Material and mechanical properties. This is used to design PCB standards, the standard addresses topics related to PCB circuit design, such as design, layout, materials, mechanical and physical characteristics, electrical characteristics, thermal constraints, parts lists, etc., as well as some requirements such as component layout, through-hole, placement, surface mount, hole connection requirements.


Global PCB design. It is a standard for sending information between PCB circuit designers and manufacturers or assembly companies. It helps to provide a standardized format for exchanging design data, thus helping to ensure consistent production results.IPC-2581 is a way to communicate the designer’s design intent. All intent initially created in the tool will always be there, only the tool will be different. So, no matter what we are doing, or creating design intent, or testing intent, IPC-2581 makes it simple and easy to transfer data. This standard greatly reduces the time spent running around communicating between design departments and manufacturers before production begins.
