Are SMT PCB better than others?

There are two sides to the coin, so we can’t absolutely say that SMT PCB is better than others, but we can analyze its advantages and disadvantages to weigh whether to choose it or not.


● Small size:For many products, size is one of the most important issues and SMT PCB can minimize the depth required to manufacture most components. These are especially important for modern devices such as smartphones, tablets and smartwatches, which require the smallest possible SMT PCB.
● Lightweight:SMT systems are one-tenth the weight of through-hole assemblies. This takes the strain off the board and allows companies to use less material to cut costs, which is an important reason to use SMT PCB exclusively.
● Flexibility:By placing some components directly on the surface, companies can leave more room for parts that cannot be placed on the surface. This provides additional flexibility in manufacturing for electronics that would otherwise not be manufactured to the desired specifications.


● Small lead space makes repairs more difficult. Surface mount parts are often placed very close together, perhaps even closer than many service tools can use. This makes repairing damaged boards very difficult, which can be a serious problem if parts have a high failure rate.
● It is difficult to ensure that solder joints can withstand thermal cycling. Choosing an assembler that is experienced with small parts is important to avoid this. If you need to minimize the failure rate and don’t have the technology to mitigate the risk, then SMT PCB is not a good choice
● Finally SMT PCB is generally not suitable for components that generate a lot of heat or have high electrical loads. Mainly because the solder melts back under too much heat.
