Epoxy resin – properties and guidelines


What is epoxy resin?

Epoxy resin is a type of reactive liquid plastic that cures to form a solid surface. Epoxy resins are usually mixed with other materials before they’re applied to surfaces such as wood or plastics. They can be applied to almost any surface except metals or glass.Epoxy resin, polyester resin, thermal plastic resin are the main matrix materials of composite prepreg.

Epoxy resins are usually applied using a special application tool called an epoxy putty knife or squeegee applicator, which allows you to apply the resin evenly without getting any air bubbles into your project area. Once the resin has been applied, it must then be cured before it becomes hard enough for you to work with on your project; this process takes at least 24 hours.

The properties of epoxy resin

●Epoxy resin is a type of polymer that starts out as a liquid, but then hardens into a durable, solid plastic.

●Epoxy resins are made up of two parts: an epoxy resin and a hardener or catalyst.

●Epoxies come in a wide variety of viscosities and reactivity.

●Epoxy resin adhesives come in single-resin formulas or as hybrid formulas with both epoxy resins and polyurethanes.

●Protection from sunlight is important for some epoxies.

●There are many specialty formulas for use on specific substrates or for specific applications.

●Epoxy comes in several different types that include liquid epoxy resin, solid epoxy resin, and semi-solid epoxies.

●Epoxy resins are generally amber in color when liquid but are usually clear after being cured.


The advantages of epoxy resin

Some key advantages of epoxy resins are the following:

  ★ Epoxy resins are used in different types of industries, including art, fitness centers and homes.

  ★ Epoxies are also used for making automotive parts like bumpers or spoilers because they can be shaped easily by hand without losing their shape once dry.

  ★ The most common use of epoxy resin is to create an incredibly durable, long-lasting surface that is also very resistant to water damage.

  ★  Epoxy resin is an excellent sealant for wood, concrete and metal surfaces because it fills cracks. As a result of this functionality, epoxy resin is commonly used as a sealant for flooring.

Types of epoxy resin CCL

Epoxy resin CCL comes in three different types.

  ◆ The first type is table top epoxy, which is used for casting things like jewelry and figurines. This can be also useful when dealing with heavy objects like vases or sculptures. 

  ◆ The second type is art resin, which has better UV resistance than regular table top brands allowing it to better preserve artwork although it can yellow over time. 

  ◆ The third type is casting epoxy which does not self-level like table top and art resins do but stays where you pour it giving you a more solid block of plastic material to work with. Casting resins come in clear, pigmented, and UV resistant versions.

The development trend and requirements for epoxy resin CCL

The first epoxy resin was developed by American scientists and engineers in 1940s. They first used it to make airplane parts but later found out that it could be used for other purposes like making electrical devices or building materials such as fiberglass insulation boards etc., which opened up new opportunities for them to develop this material more and more.

Epoxy resin CCL is a new type of high-performance epoxy resin made of polyimide film and epoxy resin. The characteristics of epoxy resin CCL are that the heat sink effect and temperature resistance are better than traditional insulating materials, the volume resistivity is extremely high, and the mechanical strength is better than glass fiber boards.

Epoxy resin CCL is a composite material and has the following requirements:

●High strength and toughness.

●Low weight compared to other polymer composites such as FRP or ABS. This makes it ideal for applications where weight reduction is required in order to reduce fuel consumption.

The most commonly used thickness for epoxy resin CCL is 0.06mm and 0.1mm. Other thicknesses are available, but they are much less common and not as widely used in the industry as these two popular options.

The application of epoxy resin in PCB industry

In PCB industry, the epoxies can be used in electronics, electrical appliances, instrumentation, aerospace and other fields to make parts of high quality with good performance such as heat resistance, environmental protection etc. Epoxy resins are often used in applications where high performance is required.

Epoxy resins have been widely used in high-performance circuit boards because of their excellent mechanical properties (low coefficient of thermal expansion) and chemical resistance to heat treatment at elevated temperatures (>300°C). Epoxy resins are also useful when it comes to bonding thin layers or plates on top of each other; this makes them easy-to-use materials for assembling printed circuit boards (PCBs).


How to avoid PCB epoxy resin material cracking during SMT process?

The most common cause of cracking during SMT PCB process is the heat input. If you want to avoid this problem, please use a lower thermal coefficient of expansion (TCE).

Another reason for PCB epoxy resin material cracking during SMT process is not enough cooling rate or insufficient cooling time. When you are using an ironing machine with high power output and low speed control, then your board will receive too much heat at once which may cause it to crack easily because of its softness and thin structure.

Tensile stress generated during PCB soldering may also cause cracking during SMT process. It occurs when two metals are joined together by pressure instead of melting them together. The PCB epoxy resin material cracking problem can be avoided by reducing these factors.

Epoxy resin is a versatile substance that can be used to create almost anything from an art piece to a table top.
