PCB connector – widely used in all electrical devices


What is a PCB connector?

PCB connector is used to transfer signals electrically. Moreover, they are also used for mechanical purposes. 

These miniatures play a great role in connecting PCBs with one another or one PCB with any other unit to create a connection and make it function effectively and efficiently.

A PCB connector is a rectangular device that creates a conductive track on a circuit board by using multi-pins and multi-wires supported by a locking mechanism. This miniature is used in building the connections between different circuit boards or any other source.

From mobile phones to cars, connectors are required and each connector holds a different purpose. There are many different PCB connections on the market, each one created to satisfy the requirements of a particular application. For instance, certain connections are expertly designed to withstand vibration and shock from external forces and to offer durability in challenging circumstances.

The direction of PCB connector

   ★ The direction of PCB connector depends upon vertical and horizontal mating.

 ● In vertical mating connector, the mating process is followed by the narrower clearance area. The contact vaping length is also the main consideration which can make it difficult to keep up with the height of the connector.

 ● In horizontal mating connection, the mating process is followed by the wider clearance area. The contact vaping length is the main consideration in which it is easier to keep up with the height of the connector.

Types of PCB connector

The design and structure of connectors vary in the context of frequencies, powers, and application settings. Before choosing a connection, you should always take into account its mechanical, electrical, and environmental characteristics. Broadly defined, there are three types of PCB connectors which depend upon the number of wires connected and the connection handles.

♥Wire-to-wire connector

Wire-to-wire connectors support internal connections electrically and electronically. The two wire-terminated connectors are used in the scenario to avoid any wire shorts which are also used in light fixtures and ceiling fans. This is followed by the tight connection which streamlines the flow of current and keeps the operations running smoothly.

♥Wire-to-board connector
The connectivity between circuits is followed the requirements of  PCB surface treatment processes  and pins. Wire-to-board connectors make sure that the locking mechanism stays aligned with the processes. In this type of connector, a rectangular-shaped multipin connection system is connected to the board.

♥Board-to-board connector
The board-to-board PCB connectors can be used in parallel, right angle, and coplanar directions to make strong connections and make the current flow stable.

When two circuit boards need a connection in a parallel manner, we place a connector in-between the two circuit boards and place the circuit boards at both ends. This creates a parallel structure.

♥Right angle
The right angle direction holds two boards at an angle of 90°, in which one is placed vertically and one circuit board is connected to it horizontally.

In a coplanar direction, two circuit boards transfer signals in a horizontal orientation. They create an angle of 180°. Their connection is made edge-to-edge.

The benefits of wire-to-bored connector

The wire-to-board connector is a simple and low-cost solution to transfer electronic signals using wires. A few benefits of the wire-to-board connectors are;

2.These connectors help the components achieve greater accuracy as their structure includes thick welding paste. Moreover, if the gadget or component falls, it doesn’t make any difference in its functionality and efficiency.

4.They promise high signal integrity performance which reflects that all the surrounding activities including vibration can’t affect its working.

6.These connectors are also used in LED PCB  industries for manufacturing processes.

7. Wire-to-board connectors are constructed and designed in a way that they can resist high currents.

Key elements of PCB connector

    There are three key elements of PCB connector that are worth mentioning.

   ★   Contact finishes
This highly affects the functionality of the connection because the whole electrical connection is dependant on the smoothness and efficiency of the contact. For this reason, finishes should be corrosion resistant.
   ★  Connector housing
Connectors need to maintain their structural stability in the event of severe chemical and thermal impacts. For optimal connector assembly and mating behaviour, the centre line distance, orientation, and uniformity of the connectors must be maintained. Connector housing should withstand the tough conditions.
   ★   Contact interface
The contact interface should be designed and maintained in a way that whenever male and female halves come into contact, the electrical performance smoothes. This can be achieved by applying desired load on the aspertiies which depends upon magnitude and quantity. Also, geometrical interaction is also an important consideration.

The application of PCB connector in automation assembly

Automation assembly in the context of PCB connectors is simply defined as connecting multiple components together to make them functional. In automation assembly, the application of PCB connectors is robotics, software, computers collecting data, and engineering machines. There are a lot more PCB connectors application that hold great importance in the automation assembly i.e. mechanical handling machines and automated devices.

The test of PCB connector

It is good to avoid major hardware failures and the worst scenarios before. For increased safety and fewer project returns, make sure that the PCB connectors are tested properly. There are 100s of  PCBA testing  defined to test the PCB connector but some of the important considerations are;

     ★ Attenuation test

In this test, the amount of energy lost is checked by passing the electrical signals to check how much heat does the PCB connector generates.

     ★ Electrical resistance

This test is taken by giving small continuous movements to the connector to see how much damage occurs.

      ★ Spring constant
Spring constant involves insertion force (push connection) and withdrawal force (pull connection) which creates high friction to check how much force can the connectors bear.
